We offer canine rehabilitation services, including hydrotherapy, to dogs that are recovering from surgery or injury, managing a variety of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular ailments, and/or managing chronic pain. Our veterinarians at Valencia Veterinary Center are proud to provide hydrotherapy to dogs with treatment options including a swimming pool and an underwater treadmill.

What Is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is a holistic treatment modality used in both human physical therapy and canine rehabilitation. Hydrotherapy makes use of all the benefits of water to aid in recovery and healing while also providing relief.

The Benefits of Hydrotherapy

Compared to stretching or exercising on land, water offers a variety of benefits to dogs who are recovering from surgery or illness or managing a chronic condition.

Hydrotherapy Services Available at Valencia Veterinary Center

Underwater Treadmill

The underwater treadmill is exactly what it sounds like, a treadmill that’s underwater. This treadmill is specialized for canine use, enclosed in a tank, and provides a completely controlled hydrotherapy environment. The advanced set up allows a dog to enter the treadmill and begin walking while the tank gradually fills with temperature-controlled water. Our canine rehab specialist can then adjust the level of the water, the subsequent weight on your dog’s joints, and the speed of the treadmill.

Swimming Pool

Our heated swimming pool provides the perfect environment for dogs to restore their strength, endurance, and range of motion with weightless exercise and the added benefits of being submerged in water while swimming and working with a canine rehab specialist. Hydrotherapy in the swimming pool is more physically demanding than the underwater treadmill, and it is not recommended for all pets.

What Type of Hydrotherapy Is Best for My Dog?

For use in hydrotherapy treatment protocols, the underwater treadmill and swimming pool offer different benefits and drawbacks. Depending on your dog’s temperament, level of physical fitness, and individual medical condition, our veterinarians will recommend a hydrotherapy treatment protocol that includes using either the underwater treadmill, swimming pool, or a combination of both.
