Stem Cell Therapy

Osteoarthritis can be truly painful and debilitating for pets. While there are many treatments and therapies available to help pets heal and manage the symptoms of arthritis, there’s only one treatment that’s truly restorative – stem cell therapy. A form of regenerative medicine available for pets, stem cell therapy can repair and restore tissues affected by these musculoskeletal problems.

What Are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are special cells that can transform into the cells of a particular organ or part of a pet’s body. In pets, stem cells can transform into several different types of tissues including:
This ability makes stem cells incredibly valuable in veterinary medicine.

Where Do Stems Cells Come From?

In veterinary medicine, there are two kinds of stem cells: embryonic and adult stem cells. In animals, adult stem cells can actually be found in all tissues of a pet’s body, including their bone marrow and fat. Most commonly, stem cells are taken from a pet’s fat tissues.

What Veterinary Conditions Are Treated with Stem Cell Therapy?

Since the science of stem cells in veterinary medicine is still new, they’re currently only used to treat osteoarthritis (caused by age or hip dysplasia). Potential applications for stem cell therapy, however, is incredibly broad. Research on the use of stem cells in repairing bone, ligament, or spinal injuries; liver and kidney disease; skin diseases; gastrointestinal issues; and cardiovascular problems is ongoing.

How Stem Cell Therapy Works (What to Expect)

Once your pet’s been identified as a candidate for stem cell therapy, treatment begins with the collection of fat cells. This procedure occurs with the pet under general anesthesia and involves a small incision usually in the groin or shoulder area.
The collected fat cells are then sent to a lab where the stem cells will be separated and concentrated.
Finally, the stem cells are injected into the affected area of your pet (usually, a hip, elbow, or knee joint). This procedure is also usually performed with a pet under general anesthesia.
